Today I had a wonderful outing with the MudCity Adventures Mini Mudsters group! We went to DuMont Meadow where we hiked Alex’s Trail, went bug sweeping, and waded into Little River.
We started off by looking at some fun flowers on the way to Alex’s Trail. We passed out magnifying glasses to take closer looks at the flowers and look at their interesting features. Our next fun finds included a worm and a red eft, the juvenile stage of an Eastern Newt (Notophthalmus viridescens). The Mudsters got a kick out of seeing the eft, and made some observations about it: that it is an orange-red color with orange spots, they have long tails, and that they have interesting looking feet.
We continued on Alex’s Trail into the woods and through the open meadow. We stopped for snack in the open meadow, and looked at the trees, bugs, and heard the birds singing around us. We heard the Red-eyed Vireo, Ovenbird, Gray Catbird, Wood Thrush, and Blue Jay.
To end our outing to DuMont Meadow, we took a refreshing dip in the Little River. We used fallen leaves from trees and used them as boats to see what direction the water is flowing.
I had a great time with MudCity! On to another fun adventure next week!
