Congratulations to Stowe Bible Camp for being recognized as Stowe Land Trust’s Volunteer of the Year for 2017. Stowe Bible Camp is an ecumenical summer camp open to all Stowe area youth that has been bringing kids together to learn and practice the values of helping others and serving one’s community for a week each June for 16 years. Since 2007, a group of 12 and 13-year-olds have been volunteering with SLT during each camp week to complete important trail maintenance, bridge repair, invasive plant removal, and spring clean-up projects on conserved lands.
“The bible camp crews get a ton of work done in a short time,” according to Kristen Sharpless, the land trust’s program manager. “We really benefit from their energy and willingness to dig and do whatever needs doing from painting to hammering to digging.”
Deb Schoepke is the outreach coordinator for the camp and has facilitated 10 years of projects with Stowe Land Trust and other community groups. “I do it because the kids love it,” said Deb. “It’s also great to expose our teens to organizations like SLT that do important work in our community. It plants a seed for when they are older.”
We will present the Volunteer of the Year Award to Deb and the Bible Camp at our annual meeting held at Strawberry Hill Farm on Saturday, September 9th, which is free and open to the public.
